About Balandra Beach
Balandra Beach — Playa Balandra — sits on the Pichilingue Peninsula approximately 25 kilometers north of La Paz city, cradled within a protected bay that opens onto the Sea of Cortez. The beach has been voted the most beautiful in Mexico by multiple publications and traveler surveys. The water in the lagoon is a luminous, shallow turquoise that ranges from ankle-deep to waist-deep across most of its area, warm as a bath, clear as glass, and so still on calm mornings that it perfectly reflects the sky above and the desert mountains behind.
What distinguishes Balandra is the totality of the experience — the color of the water, the scale of the landscape, the silence, the complete absence of development, the mangrove channels that branch from the lagoon's edges, and the famous Mushroom Rock (El Hongo), a naturally sculpted rock formation that has become one of the most photographed natural features in all of Baja California Sur. The beach is protected as part of a conservation area, with a daily visitor cap that ensures the experience never becomes a crowd scene.
Getting to Balandra requires either a car or a guided tour from La Paz. This friction is, in many ways, Balandra's greatest asset: it rewards those who make the effort with a beach experience that feels genuinely extraordinary.

Swim and Wade the Turquoise Lagoon
The primary activity at Balandra is simply walking out into the lagoon and experiencing the extraordinary quality of the water. The tidal flat is so shallow that adults can walk several hundred meters from shore with the water never reaching above the waist. The sand bottom is fine, soft, and free of sharp rocks, making it exceptionally family-friendly.
Photograph and Visit the Mushroom Rock
El Hongo — the Mushroom Rock — is Balandra's iconic landmark, a naturally formed rock balanced on a slender base that emerges from the shallow water. The rock can be reached on foot at low tide via a shallow wade of approximately 200 meters from the main beach. Early morning light with the mirror-smooth lagoon (approximately 7–9am) is genuinely spectacular. Check the tide tables before visiting.
Kayaking the Mangrove Channels
Balandra's protected bay includes a network of mangrove channels that branch from the lagoon's southern edge. These channels are navigable by kayak and offer an extraordinary wildlife experience — herons, egrets, ospreys, and spotted eagle rays are common. Kayak rentals are available near the beach entrance for approximately $15–25 per hour.
Sunset Views from the Peninsula
A trail climbs from the beach area up onto the rocky headland at the northern end of Balandra Bay. The view from the top — across the turquoise lagoon, the Mushroom Rock, and the Sea of Cortez — is one of the great panoramic landscapes of Baja California Sur. Sunset from this viewpoint is a memory that stays with visitors for years.
Lagoon Swimming
Shallow warm turquoise water, sandy bottom, safe for all ages. Best morning calm. Simply unmissable.
Mushroom Rock Visit
Wade 200m at low tide. Best photography: 7–9am with mirror-smooth water. Check tide tables before going.
Mangrove Kayaking
$15–25/hr from beach rental. Herons, rays, rich wildlife in the channels. Best in calm morning conditions.
Peninsula Hike
