About Chileno Bay

Chileno Bay occupies a curved cove along the Los Cabos tourist corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, sheltered from the open Pacific by rocky headlands that create conditions of extraordinary calm even on days when the surrounding ocean is active. The result is water of remarkable clarity — visibility of 30–50 feet is common — and a marine environment that feels genuinely pristine compared to the busier beaches to the west. Chileno has been a protected marine area since 1988 and the difference is visible immediately: the fish are unafraid, the coral formations are intact, and the overall experience of snorkeling here is closer to a marine sanctuary than a public beach.

The beach itself is a gentle crescent of coarse sand backed by low dunes and a public parking area. Facilities are basic — restrooms, some shade palapas, and a small snack stand — which is precisely why the atmosphere feels so different from the resort beaches. Families spread out on the sand, local fishermen work the rocks at the bay's edges, and snorkelers slip in and out of the water with unhurried pleasure. This is a beach that rewards visitors who know to look for it, which means it is rarely as crowded as its quality deserves.

Chileno Bay is 15 minutes from Casa de Corona. Make it your morning routine — swim in crystal water, eat chips and salsa, and be back on your terrace with margaritas by noon.

Top Things To Do at Chileno Bay

Snorkeling the Marine Reserve

Chileno Bay's designation as a protected marine area means the underwater environment is in genuinely good health — something that cannot be said for all of Cabo's beaches. The rocky headlands at either end of the bay create habitat for an impressive variety of species: parrotfish, sergeant majors, angelfish, triggerfish, pufferfish, needlefish, and the occasional sea turtle are regularly encountered. Moray eels live in the rock crevices at the bay's eastern point. Spotted eagle rays glide through the deeper water offshore. Snorkeling is best in the morning before the afternoon breeze picks up — visibility is highest and the light angle makes the underwater world most vivid. Equipment rentals are available from vendors on the beach for approximately $10–$15 per hour, or bring your own for a fee-free experience.

Swimming and Beach Days

Chileno Bay's protected location makes it one of the safest swimming beaches in the Los Cabos corridor — the calm, clear water is appropriate for all ages and the gentle slope of the bottom means depth increases gradually from the shoreline. Children can wade and splash in the shallows while adults snorkel further out. The beach itself is spacious enough that even on busy weekends in high season there is room to spread out comfortably. Bring a cooler, a beach umbrella, and everything you need for the day — the on-site facilities are minimal by design, and that is part of the appeal.

Kayaking the Headlands

The rocky headlands at either end of Chileno Bay offer excellent sea kayaking for those who want to explore beyond the main cove. The eastern headland has a small sea cave accessible at certain tide levels and calm conditions, and paddling around the point reveals additional smaller coves that see virtually no foot traffic. Kayak rentals are available on the beach from approximately $20–$30 per hour for singles, $35–$45 for doubles. The best conditions for kayaking are in the morning before the afternoon sea breeze develops.

Scuba Diving

For certified divers, Chileno Bay is one of the best shore-dive sites on the Baja peninsula. The eastern rocky point drops to approximately 40 feet and hosts dense populations of reef fish, large schools of jacks, and frequent ray sightings. Dive operators from Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo run guided dives here for approximately $75–$95 for a two-tank guided dive including equipment. The relatively short boat ride from either town (15–20 minutes) means more time in the water compared to longer-distance dive sites.
